The SAGA Biography traces the band’s history over the last three decades; from

the pre-SAGA days with Truck and Fludd in the early seventies, ‘till the departure of singer Michael Sadler in December 2007. The members of SAGA have approved of this project and, in an effort to ensure factual correctness, they read the book prior to release.

“Thirty years is a long time in the life of a band and as you can imagine there are many twists and turns that the long road brings! There were a lot of happy times as well as some not so happy times and Edwins account of these are entertaining as well as enlightening for anyone who wants to go down that road or fans wanting to learn some of the inner workings of SAGA and the members. You won’t put it down!”
JIM GILMOUR, SAGA

Edwin Ammerlaan is an Amsterdam based journalist who has contributed articles to various Dutch rock magazines since 1986. He has spent many years researching and writing this definitive book on SAGA’s history. Along the way, he has carried out extensive and detailed interviews with current and former band members (Michael Sadler, Ian Crichton, Jim Crichton, Jim Gilmour, Steve Negus, Brian Doerner, Christian Simpson, Greg Chadd), album producers and engineers (Paul Gross, Rupert Hine, Andi Charal), management personnel and various musicians.

Thanks for doing this Edwin :-)

canceled Helmond Show !!!!

Regrettably, last night’s concert in Helmond had to be cancelled due to circumstances well beyond the band’s control. But the decision was not made before exhausting all possible solutions to a situation that, unless rectified in a satisfactory manner, would have compromised not only the sound of the band, but also the safety of the individuals on the stage. Be assured that, despite the adverse conditions presented, absolutely every effort was made in an attempt to make this concert happen and the band would like everyone to know that the decision to cancel the show was, and remains to be, a very painful one to make, as every show on this tour is as important to the band as it is to the fans, and this kind of decision would only have been made as an absolute last resort!
But the truth concerning the events of last night , and not the propaganda that was offered to the fans at the time of the cancellation ("the band refused to use the equipment provided"), is as follows;
Contractually, the venue is responsible for certain requirements to be met in order for any concert to take place. Unfortunately, in this instance they were not. Specifically the question of the power. It seems that the power was in such a poor state of affairs as to produce a horrendous array of sounds, completely unrelated to anything of a musical nature, and consequently would have resulted in an evening of noise! After being made aware of the problem, no attempt was made by the venue to fix the problem until it was too late in the day, and even then, there was no guarantee that their potential solution would have offered any different results. In other words, it was not until it was too late that an alternative was even offered. Also, considering the gravity of the electrical problem, there was also the question of the personal safety of everyone on the stage regarding the potential for electrical shock! With that in mind, the decision to cancel was made. At this point it should be noted that the decision produced reactions from the local "help" ranging from outrage to threats of a physical nature! So much so that the police were called and responded to what could have become a very ugly situation!
Be that as it may, to put it quite simply, the quality of the show and integrity of the band would have suffered greatly, not to mention that the safety of the individuals on the stage could not be guaranteed and therefore both band and crew would have been at great risk!
This is indeed an extremely unfortunate turn of events, and one that could have probably been avoided. Unfortunately for you, the fans, it was not, and for that the band is deeply sorry!
Once again, the band and crew were both saddened and deeply disappointed with the news of the cancellation, especially since it was out of their control, and are presently trying to find a way to make it up to everyone involved.
Thank you for your understanding!

News on Steve's Website

Wednesday, October 10, 2007

It seems that Saga has decided to use Chris Sutherland from Kim Mitchell's band to play drums on the upcoming tour. It was very strange that they knew this last night when I played with them in Brantford, Ontario, but neglected to tell me.

I wish Chris all the best with the tour, and I am sorry that I won't see all the loyal supporters on this one, but I hope to be touring in Europe with my new band soon!

Regards to all and best wishes to Brian Doerner.

STATEMENT FROM BRIAN DOERNER

To the Fans of Saga, I am lucky to be alive and recovering at home with my family today, October 8, 2007 after suffering a heart attack on Friday, October 5, 2007 and I anticipate a full recovery and look forward to playing drums again in the future. Regrettably, I will not be drumming for the 10,000 Days tour under medical advice. I wish the band the BEST OF LUCK with this great new CD and I would like to say that working with SAGA has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career and I will miss them greatly as friends and as talented musicians”.

News from www.michaelsadler.com

Hello all,

Just popped in to my hotel room pre-show to clarify and update Brian's condition. Apparently it was NOT a heart attack as such. Nevertheless, it was severe enough to have warrented immediate attention. He is stable as far as I know at the moment. I'll give you more info when it becomes available.

We regret to inform everyone that Brian Doerner, SAGA's current drummer suffered a heart attack yesterday.
He is stable, and recovering from an emergency angioplasty at this time.
As an unexpected twist, Steve Negus will be joining the old gang to perform the 2 remaining shows for their 30th Anniversary. Welcome back Steve!

We will let everyone know how SAGA will be handling the European shows as soon as we find out more about Brian's health.

That's shocking news, we hope Brian recovers quickly. We're thinking of him, two thumbs up Brian !!!!

June 13, 2007

Dear friends, fans, critics and anyone with any degree of curiosity, I thought it only appropriate on this, the 30th anniversary of the band, to offer you my best explanation as to why I’ve chosen to end my tenure with Saga at the end of this year.

When I said it was for personal reasons, I was serious.
The easiest way to explain it is in the form of an analogy.

Picture yourself sitting in your office at the same job you’ve happily, and successfully, held for 30 years and one which you find ultimately satisfying. You’re listening to one of your favorite songs of all time, staring out the window - imagining what it must be like standing onstage in front of thousands of devoted fans and constantly being told how great you are and how much you’ve touched their lives with your music! Just think how great that would be!

Now, reverse the situation, and imagine I’m the one looking at you thinking “wouldn’t that be great?” because, believe it or not, that’s how I feel and in some ways, I’m actually envious of you!

As I think about it, I’ve spent more than half of my life focused on my career. Whether traveling or in the studio, I simply haven’t spent a great deal of time at home, wherever that may have been at the time, over the last 30 years!

I suppose what I’m trying to say is, I’ve decided to shift my focus to what now matters most to me and something that has eluded me since we began the band…that something is my family!

As you can well imagine, maintaining a family in the traditional sense is next to impossible when you’re gallivanting around the globe. Calling home to check in when you can, missing birthdays and other important family activities, sending flowers on special occasions to remind those at home that you still exist, is no longer an option for me.

That is why I have decided, not without some degree of regret, to change my lifestyle - and the timing, (which seems to be confusing some of you) couldn’t have come at a better time. I can only hope that you understand me when I say that I feel as though “it’s my turn”!

Just for the record, for those of you who may be taking this “personally” and feel that I owe you an apology, I am sorry. Be that as it may, should anyone feel the need for answers to any specifics regarding all of this, plans for the future etc., I will be more than happy to answer you directly through my personal forum.

With all this, allow me to say THANK YOU! from the bottom of my heart, for all the love and support you have given me over the last three decades!

Always,

Michael Sadler

SAGA's Support is an amazing Band from Swiss called

PHÉBUS

If the band wasn't so special and the singer didn't have such an amazing voice
Phébus stands for melodious rock with edges, poetic and intelligent lyrics and, front and centre, the unique voice of singer Giusy. Think young Bono of U2 with more drama and a hint of Brian Molko, and you got it. Be it the slightly melancholic "Nothing I can do" or "Economist" with its heavy guitar riffs - Phébus delivers surprise after surprise. Sometimes sad, sometimes irritating, always with a bit of melodrama - but never boring.
Give Phébus a little more time and exposure, and they could very well play in the big guys' sandbox one day.

If people can manage to listen to their CD at all, that is. Just saying.
